Have you ever heard the phrase “He who hesitates is lost?” It is a saying that tracks back to line from a play in the early 1800’s. The general meaning of the phrase over time has come to mean that quick action leads to success, where delay or self-doubt does not.
It might be related to phrases about opportunity as well. “Opportunity knocks at every man’s door.” Or “If the window of opportunity appears, don’t pull down the shade.”
In today’s message, taken from ACTS 24:22-27, we read about the opportunity that came to Felix, the Roman Governor over Judea. Where for two years he held the Apostle Paul captive and, on many occasions, had him come and speak to him about the followers of Christ Jesus known as The Way. Paul told Felix about the teaching Jesus had given to those who chose to listen. He also talked about the certainty of God’s coming judgement on the wicked and the promise of forgiveness to those who trusted in Jesus for salvation by faith.
But when the window of that opportunity came to close, Felix hesitated. Rather than commit to Jesus in faith – he chose to close the blinds.
How many people have had the opportunity for salvation knock on the door? Jesus declares, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.”
I hope you find this message encouraging, thought provoking, or convicting, if need be.
I pray if you have not opened the door for Jesus, you will today.
Because the saying is true – “He who hesitates is lost.”
